AC C cylinder sleeve seals

Hey all,
I posted several weeks back about "AC C coolant in oil". I have opted for replacing the cylinder sleeve seals which arrived yesterday from "external_link". My question is, are these supposed to be true o-rings because that is certainly what they sent but the old seals appear to be more rectangular in cross section and the grooves in the liner seem wider than the o-rings themselves...Any explanation would be greatly appreciated! Also, what if any, type of lube should I use when re-installing the sleeves.

Yes they are true o-rings but over time they form to look like they are not so your seeing what you should. You do need to clean the area of the block that the sleeve fits in real good and use dish soap to lube the o-rings when you install the sleeves. I always use dawn dish detergent
 
To seal, the O ring must have pressure from expansion where it seals. To do this in must compress as it enters its resting place. The grooves in the sleeves must be large enough to have room as the O ring compress between the sleeve and block it has to expand somewhere or it will shear off the extra and then would then not have the material to expand to form the seal. Then they would leak.

Remember when installing even the old used sleeve it must be able to turn 360 degrees all the way down in the hole without the O ring. If it does not you are in danger of shearing the new O ring which will then leak.

Years ago an AC Mechanic told me to use NON-Hardening Permatex liberally on the O-rings during assembly AND, Pour in a good full Pint of the same and let it spread over the entire bottom of the water jacket..surrounding each sleeve..and eliminating any potential leak that may otherwise occur..
