So I am the new owner of a 6080. Traded a red one in on it. A couple questions, what is the serial number break on the factory repair of the thrust bearing problem, second what is the proper procedure on the pto when not in use. Also wasn't there a break in the serial number where AC installed higher compression pistons for easier starting in cold weather? This tractor has the ether button and heater button. Also has a little over 5000 hours and never had a loader on it.

Not sure on the dates. But the PTO operation is with the Engagement lever (Left of seat) down=off. The Big yellow lever on the right is to be forward at all times.
To engage the PTO, pull big stick back, pull up on engagement lever, then let the big stick ease forward.

I was never made aware of a serial number break. But then maybe the "powers that were" didn't figure I needed to know!
I don't recall any factory thrust bearing fix. We (I) installed a field fix on all the ones we sold. It amounted to a frame bolted to the front of the engine. A greasable timken bearing became the thrust bearing. Installation required measuring and shimming so as to avoid creating more problems.
And indeed they did up the compression for cold starting, cold weather or not. They could need a whiff of ether on anything but a hot day.

Improved starting/higher compression was implemented at 6080 engine serial 20833. Manifold heaters were added at tractor serial 5639(Dec '83). I believe the engine block was reinforced and a larger internal thrust bearing installed sometime in the early 1982 model year. I have a late 1981 serial number 2096 6080 and it has the external "helper" on it. Your AGCO dealer can get you the info you seek... as I got it... but can't remember where I put it. There are multiple reasons for keeping the pto clutch in the engaged mode all the time, except when actively using the PTO. However, when I pull out of the field after spreading manure or chopping, I instinctively reach down and push the PTO engagement lever down. Remember, to engage the PTO gear train the engine must be not running. Get yourself an operators manual and shop manual and read them cover to cover, multiple times and refer to them often. If you have an external thrust washer helper kit.. get the adjustment instructions from your AGCO dealer. And remember, if you have trouble getting the transmission out of gear, on an incline, then you probably should check your external thrust washer helper tolerances/clearance and make the proper adjustments. Our 1981, 6080 has only 3670 hours on it. As the engine is in very good condition we only need to give it a small shot of ether below 40 degrees.

On the pto, when the big lever is back, the clutch is disengaged and the throw out bearing is holding the clutch fingers forward, just like when you hold your foot on a clutch pedal. the lever needs to stay in the engaged position at all times unless you are using the pto and want to stop it momentarily to open a baler gate or something similar. I had to put a clutch in a 6060 because the fingers had worn out by leaving the clutch disengaged. Just pretend the hand lever is a clutch pedal, if you don't want the pto on, push the lever down that's on the left side next to the seat. That puts it out of gear. Nice tractors, for the money.
