Recently purchased a model C Allis. Appears serial number has been ground off. Can it be dated using casting codes? Where could I find the casting codes? Thanks, Swede
 
It can be dated by engine serial number located on left rear flange of engine. It should start with "CE". Give us that and we can help. You can also take the valve cover off and in the bottom is a casting date. That will give you the year.
 
Serial number ground off??? Where are you looking for the number?? Serial number on a C is just forward of the shifter and is a raised letter/number and if ground off sounds like a tractor that maybe to hot to keep
 
You cant rely on the engine serial number to tell you the year of the rest of the tractor because the engine could have been swapped out.
 
Naw they are stamped in with a letter/number punch with a hammer. Might still be there if you use a led pencil to try to find it. If it received a new transmisson from Allis thru a dealer sometime it could have been forgot.
 
Old, just ahead of the shift lever in raised letters says"tractor no". directly to the rear of this is a flat area that appears to have been ground off. Swede
 
These are some numbers as best I could read them. Right side of engine ,center just below head--AM2916-12.Right axle housing AM3219-6, left side of transmission housing 3284, 0-13-RP?. Thanks Swede
 
When the numbers are stamped the metal is disturbed for a distance below the stamp bottom. They can detect those types of stamps on stolen guns sometimes. Lay a piece of paper over it and lightly go over it with a led pencil and see what happens. I think the poilce uses some type a acid. You might check with them.

My 1939 B has generator, foot brakes, etc. Found 1941 casting numbers on the engine and other parts. Believe it's actually a 1941 with the trans replaced from a 1939.
