I am replacing a 649T diesel engine with a 670T that requires adding a aftercooler in a 8010 A/C tractor. What is a good method to fit/connect a aftercooler or how can the use of a aftercooler be mitigated?

glr62, thank you for responding to our question.
The tractor is a power driven clutch (per manual).
We will work on the engine tomorrow. Now we need to find out why the 670T does not require a intercooler. We probably should just stick with the 649T engine, but could not locate a good one!

I assume you are putting a 426 where a 301 was. The higher horse 426 was intercooled using a water to air cooler bolted to the engine. I assume you could fab an air to air cooler if you were so inclined. If the 8010 radiator has less cooling capacity than the 8050 and 8070 that would have been intercooled, you will certainly have overheating issues if you use all the ponies the bigger motor makes.

what happened to yours? got one that has been in a combine, was going to put in a 190xt, but too many things just would not fit.
 
Hi glr62. Our tractor was purchased used and it perfoprmed very well for us until recently. It now uses oil and is noisy. We had a mechanic drop the pan & he told us the crackshaft is worn. We are hoping to exchange out to a better used engine and avoid the high cost to have our engine rebuilt. My son found the 670T engine (out of a combine) & thought he and I could handle the job (until we became aware of the cooler issue).

I still don't see how the cooler is an issue. Does the 426 you are putting in have one on it? You really shouldn't need one and the 8010 rear end doesn't need the extra power the cooler would let you make. I would almost think you could find a 301 out of something that would be easier to put in than a 426. Or spend the money on a rebuild and know what you have. Used motor could do the same thing yours did the first hour you run it.

Hi Aaron, Thank you for the help. I think we will continue trying to locate a 301 somewhere as you suggested and forget the 426. We really like the Allis Chalmers tractor and will keep it.

By the time you swap engines, you have almost the same amount of labor as just overhauling yours. You have to pull the camshaft to swap the front plate to make it fit into the tractor. Basically dismantle the whole engine less crank and pistons, and then re-assemble.

As a dealer, if you aren't sure of your ability to swap the engine, then get yours rebuilt. We have done this in the past for customers that refused to rebuild them, and it was basically the same cost....and you still have a used engine.
