Topic: D15 dies suddenly starter dead for minutes

My usually reliable D15 has developed an
electrical problem which I hope someone can help
me solve.
Often attempts to start results in absolutely
nothing - no sound or action. Repeated pushing of
the starter button eventually gets action. Also on
occasion the running engine will quit suddenly as
if the key were turned-off. Finally when turned
off for a while, the battery goes dead (although
it charges when running).
I think I must have a short - perhaps in the key-
switch? Would appreciate anyone's guidance.

I'd start by checking the connections, at battery with a carbon pile load tester. Attach the clamps to the battery connection, after it quits. If it shows low voltage/ bad battery, remove the wires from the battery, and re-test. If you have good voltage, at battery, check the ground. If that checks out good, then move on to solenoid, key switch, and ignition. Do you have a heavy ring of keys on the switch? If so, try lightening the side load on the key. Also be sure to check the little square piece of bakelite, that carries the hot wire through to the points.

Well first off you sound like you have poor battery connections remember clean tight and bright. As for the battery going dead sounds like you have a V.R. that has sticking points in it so as not to shut off like it should do it drains the battery when sitting. As for it dieing out that sounds like a loose wire some place which in turn goes back to the clean tight and bright which hold true at all connections

I would say all your main connections are suspect. The good news is on that tractor they're small and close together. I would start with checking, or maybe even just replacing the solenoid, down on the starter. And of course, all connections right from the battery(to ground) and to the solenoid, then back to the ammeter/dash, etc. are all suspect.
