I had the radiator fixed on my WD. I pulled apart the cooling system and did not find a thermostat, It appears that there would be a spot for one in the pipe that comes out of the top of the head. I have not owned the tractor very long, and have not run it very much, plus the temp guauge did"t work so I couldn"t tell how hot it was getting.

shutters were on all-fuel WDs for use with low octane/tractor fuel and distillate. these tractors had an auxiliary tank to start on gas then you closed the shutters to get engine hot enough to switch to low octane. shutters helped keep temperature up, but all WDs also had thermostats

Dad bought a new 1951 WD and it had shutters. Years later he removed them. Don't know why though.

It depends if you have the housing for one, if not its not just a matter of putting one in

If your has shutter it may well not need a thermostat but you can install one if you want. With one in the engine will run better and keep the correct temp easier then you trying to adjust the shutters all the time. I would use a 180 degree one my self

May be a cover up for a weak water pump or a plugged radiator.

Many people pull the thermostats out so as to make an engine run cooler which some times does work but it is still not real good for the engine because they need to run at or close to a set temperature

I remember a shutter adjustment sticking out the top/side of the cowling of the Radiator on my Grandad's WD..

Wonder when they went to the Thermostat..or decided shutters were not needed..??

Ron..

I can not tell you when but I can say it was some time after 1947 since my 1947 W Speed patrol has shutters on it

My 1951 CA#669 has a thermostat and shutters and is a gas engine. I wonder what they were thinking? Dad bought this tractor new.
