For the farmers....all brands...the good, the bad, the ugly!

What were the biggest flops ever made in the tractor world? Every company had some, so what are the ones you know about?

Rick

The first tractor Dad bought was a used Case VA. Good working tractor but the hydraulic cylinder was very weak. They fixed that on the VAC, though.

Depends on how far back you want to look...

The very Early "Rear-Motored" tractors were very prone to flipping over....and they steered in the center with a rack and pinion..!!!

I don't think you are thinking about that vintage tho..!!!

Ron..

No any vintage counts. I think most companies learned from thier mistakes, some just took longer than others like IH with the TA. I know a lot of guys farming with the TA and love it but I also know a fair number who will not look at any IH with it.

Was just wondering, without trying to start a fight what others peoples thoughts were on this without picking on any one brand.

Well, I had a 2+2 ,and if you used the tractor for what it was designed for, it gave me pretty good service. However, I didn't find a whole lot of jobs that it really was suited for. Pretty neat to drive. As for 1030 Cases, I could not keep the heads from failing on mine. Didn't have any rearend trouble, I guess because I couldn't keep it running long enough to shell the rear end. No gear problems for the xt190,however I broke plenty of rear axles because mine was an early model with small housings. I understand they corrected that problem on the later ones. I suppose the worst tractor that really soured me was a 4640 Quad range. It really stung me good with tranny problems that went on and on as long as I had it. I guess that was my bad luck as other folks seem to have good luck with them.

WOW i never heard that and grew and grew up around guys who used tham and pulled them. I think the rear ends must have been over built because the used them for pulling. cool to find out thes4e things. thanks.

We had MM on the farm i worked at and had trouble with heads cracking. otherwise good tractors. A neighbor had a MMzb but wished it had more power but he had a ni mounted picker on it
Wished i could have drove it once.

Ford 6000, like the edsel, front end looks like it's sucking a lemon. They were recalled repaired and repainted to another color, but still lemons!

LOL that is one ugly tractor!

Bobby don't get me wrong now! I like the looks from the 8N to the 800 series and the 1000 series but don't much care for the 900 (wide front on those looks funkey)and think that the 6000 is just ugly. I'd love to have a 3000 or 4000 plus a 7000! Kinda like I think that the 100 series AC was about the best looking tractor ever. Kinda like the look of the 06 66 56 and 86 IH's but don't really care for the looks of the letter series.

I'm also looking at tractors that had design or production issues too, not just looks.

(quoted from post at 17:55:23 10/10/11) IH 560 diesel glow plug starting even in the summer.

That went on into the 706 too. My BIL's 2 560's needed the glow plugs if they sat for more than a half hour even in the summer, a friends 706 is the same way and his has a fresh engine, pump and injectors.

Rick

The only Massey I ever saw with a broke frame rolled down a hill into a tree. Bunch of 44's and variations around here and never broke a frame. Never heard of such a thing......

My Farmall 504 needs its glow plugs anytime the engine is cold. Just takes longer in the winter than in the summer, but always hits. Nature of indirect injection engines.
