New Project: AC One-Eighty (180) Pics

I took a walk from the "Red Side (IH)" and bought an "Orange One." This is my Allis Chalmers 180. I bought a reprint of the Operators, Service, and Parts manuals. They have been helpful, but I am sure I will have questions. Anything I need to know about this series of tractor? What are they worth in this condition. What are they worth freshened up and painted?

So far this is what I can tell. The engine runs strong with very little blow by. Right now I am using the "universal key", the electrical system needs gutted and re-wired from scratch. Not a gauge on it works, tach broken, I plan to replace all. Seat is bad and will be replaced. Bad re-paint, looks orangish-pink, but sheet metal is straight. Two almost new batteries. Minor oil leaks, several I have already fixed (O-ring boss fittings, loose valve cover screws). Still learning the Power Director, so I may have questions later. Missing the LH side skirt by the fuel tank, I will have a sheet metal shop make me one, seems simple. Needs a pre-cleaner bowl, one on the way. Muffler has been hit and the base is cracked, one on the way.

In the last picture, what is the extra hole in the hood for. It is on the right side in front of the muffler.

Here are the pictures.

Let me know what ya'll think and what should I expect along the way.

Enjoy,

The OEM pre-cleaner could have been in-line with the muffler. This one has a Donaldson dry filter in front of the tractor. It is somewhat visible in the front view picture. Were they all dry or were the early ones oil bath? This is a SN 5000 witch makes it a 1968.

Thanks,

That explains it. This one is shotgun out of the air filter housing straight up to the pre-cleaner. Someone must have not liked the "S" hose.

Nice tractor, too bad it faded to pink. They were are a solid tractor. Power director is a low high neutral lever , neutral giving you live PTO when stopped and you can shift on the fly whereas the 4 speed is non syncro.

Very nice choice , very nice tractor !!!! I love the 180,s ; they are very tough , easy to operate tractors ; one thing when you paint her up ; PLEASE PUT THE CORRECT MUFFLER ON IT !!! That is one of my peeeves , a 180 has the muffler pipe coming out of one side , not the middle; I work on alot of these , email if any questions

Everyone is is right the air cleaner and muffler should be in line. I'm guessing whoever bought it new had a specific high dust demand like a county or highway road paving crew using a brush cleaner thus the off color. If it's a clean or professional job it was probably a bid job like a county or state. Anyway I'm speculating if all the major componenets are good the only PIA is the rear brake replacements otherwise you're good. I've always liked that design and the 301ci engine is sound as or better than the American dollar. IMHO
