Ridiculous question about a WD

OK, for starters I'm physically limited.
Gettin rid of everything because of it.
Was a mechanic for years, its in my blood, but can barely do anything.
Not super familiar with tractors, but had a couple, loved them, and loved working on them. Love antique stuff too.
Hate to see everything go.
Not familiar with the WD.
Not knowin' anymore about me or the tractor,
I'm takin a WD on trade that runs good.
At least I'll have somethin, then.
maybe allowin too much for it on the trade, but it will help a guy out, and I don't really care about the dollars at this point (not that I'm rich, I just hate gettin rid of my stuff).
Oh, it Has a brush hog, fully operable.
Its an opportunity to keep me from bein' tractorless, and I'd hate to be that way. really can't do much, but at least it would be mine and paid for.
Spose I could sit next to it and look at it from time to time.
Maybe even operate it on a good day.
The ridiculous question:
Think I'll be happy with it?
How well do you all like the WD's?
Are they a decent old tractor?
I'd really like some opinions, this isn't a joke.
Or go ahead and flame me, if you like, but I hope not.

You should be happy with a WD. WD's are very good tractors. They are dependable, reliable, and were the second highest produced tractor by Allis. Most parts are still easy to come by. I personally enjoy my WD. At the present moment mine is just a parade and show tractor, but none the less is very enjoyable to ride and of decent size to do just about anything that you can ask of it. The only concern I would have is pertaining to what you mean by physically limited? They did not come standard with power steering but an aftermarket kit can be purchased to remedy this if needed. Does it still have the rear "step plate" attached to the rear axle, if not, mounting the tractor may become difficult with time. I hope this helps and that you can find some enjoyment/happiness inspite of your current situation.

The WD is the one older AC tractor that I dont have!, maybe someday when one locally becomes available. I have the WD45, which is supposed to be a more powerful version of the WD. If there is any one thing that I would change, it would be, to be able to stand up and operate it, simular to the older olivers, farmalls, and A&B John Deeres. I love the dependability, and economy, of all of my AC's, also the suprising pulling power, for their size. My little AC's are a bugger for me to mount, and get sit down on them--The B,C, and CA. The WD45 I board from the rear step, and swing my butt in the seat, but would like to be able to stand up comfortably, when trying to see down the left side, at where my left front tire is running. I am 71, and not as agile as I used to be. I do think you will like the WD, especially if it is in good useable shape. Replacing brakes on that old of a tractor can be very challanging, as is the over center hand clutch.

Ralph, my 52 WD has the seat that flips up from left to right & almost lays against the fender. This gives me a nice platform to stand on. It may be an option for that year as it came new with a mounted picker & power steering. Keith

Seems to me older folks that did not grownup operating them did not like them. I move the left fender out 4 inches so could get on and off from the front. Had to cut a foot off a C 70 truck frame years ago and it just laid perfect over the bolts on the axle and over the regular fender bracket on axle. Cut spacers for longer bolts to bolt it on. Then made a step that bolted to frame. With mounted equipment on back can't get on as easy as use to. The piece of truck frame made a nice flat place on top of axle for step.

I love mine. Gusty, hard working tractor. Easy to wrench on if needed, parts are easy to find. My only concern would be just how limited you are. None of my business, but they can be hard to get on and off from the rear. Need to be able to throw your right leg over the punkin to work the brakes. If you are long legged, say over 6' or so, working the clutch can be a bit tricky. I tend to get folded up on mine. No big deal now, but when I'm old and arthritic, I'm thinking a D17 would be more fun. My advice would be to try it out first to see if it'll work for your limitations. The tractor iteself is great, but I'd hate to see it not work out for you and be frustrated with it.

I'm 6' tall, and I find that the clutch and brakes fit my stature well. A bit of a pain to get on, but I am young enough that I just come up over the back of the seat and don't do any swings and shifts. But one day, I'll learn. :D

Wow, thank you everyone. I feel much better about getting this.
It is helping the other guy out, too, to take it on trade.
I'm pretty bullheaded, so I can probably do ok getting on and off.
It may hurt a bit, but oh well--lol.
The aftermarket power steering may be a need.
Do you happen to have a link, or manufacturer name for that?
I do hate to see my 190 go.
I'm just needing to thin the herd way down.
Been nice to get the full cash price, but when I learned this guy's situation, he's had a rough year with equipment. Besides, I really don't want to be tractorless, I think I have a problem.
They say the first step is admitting it...lol

I really wouldn't worry about the power steering. I've had a wide and narrow front with a loader and both work good without. With no loader, I can easily steer mine, even one handed. Char-lynn made an aftermarket kit. See them from time to time on eBay, bring anywhere from $300 to $500 just fir the kit. My dad has a WD and a Wd45 one with factory and one with Char Lynn. Works nice, but I wouldn't spend the money to put it on mine.

I don't have power steering on mine, and honestly, unless you're sitting at a complete stop turning isn't really a big issue.

Another concern you may have without us knowing your issues, would be they are kinda hard on your back. You sit behind the rear axle, and it tends to bounce you around maybe a little more than sitting towards the center.

All around great tractor when properly maintained, not designed for 3 point implments, rather the snap coupler units. Adapters can be purchase to convert to 3 point.

Usualy a snappy tractor that does it's share for the HP it has. They have a govenor that pays real close attention to it's job as most AC tractors do.

Good luck, and enjoy.

We'll find out later this week if/when the deal goes through.
We shook on it, so I know my end is guaranteed.
Figure if worse comes to worse, my neighbor down the road and I are pretty tight. His boy will love comin' down and usin it, plus he can use it at there place.
My medical limitations--a laundry list, don't want to bore ya'--lol

I'm appreciating all the input, feeling better and better every time I read a reply.
Thank you, folks.

There are some aftermarket seats for 'em that ride a little different and easier on the back, with different springs. I find that if I throw an old jacket or pair of blue jeans on mine that it rides alright. Or sometimes I stand up to drive (left foot on the flat pan above the PTO, and right foot on the right axle housing).

Should be gettin it here in an hour or two.
Based the deal on trust, haven't even seen it yet.
Though I'm bidding farewell to my 190, which I seriously don't want to do--I just can't do the work on it that it needs, least right now--
I'm gettin kinda excited about seein' the WD.
Neighbor and his boy are comin over to.
Think his boy is more excited than anybody else--lol.
Hopefully I will be able to post a pic soon.
Thanks again, everyone...

On Edit , I'll shorten this up.
Need to find out where to order parts.
WD needs more than I figured.
I'm too nice, went ahead and made the deal.
No ticks or knocks, operates fine, but no oil pressure.
Barely spurted out when removed filter and briefly ran it.
Gonna drop the pan, clean any sludge,
maybe some on pickup causing problem.
New oil and filter, and see what it does.
From there, I may play with the plug by the dipstick, I think that can be shimmed. I'll have a good test gage for it.
May wind up going back in and changing oil pump, and try again.
Also, Thought governor was a problem,
but I believe it is in the carb hangin it up.
So, I need:
Oil pan gasket, carb kit. (found filters at local rural king.)
Possibly need an oil pump, good used or new.
Can anyone suggest a good supplier for parts such as this for a WD???
Thanks...

Disregard--looks like I can order most through this site.
Just have to ID my carb.
Is either service manual better, or what's the difference.
For the WD they list the I&T manual, then another one that says WD Gas and Diesel.
I'll be ordering the parts and operators manuals as well.

Question, though, anybody know a good supplier for a good used oil pump? May wind up needing one, I hope no worse than that...
