B Steering Column Parts Question? 1939

Finally got the old broken steering wheel off the column of the 39 B. Inside the top of the shaft housing was a single round rubber insert that was melted quite a bit by the transferred heat of my torch. Rusted nut, rusted wheel center... it was a multi day project soaking and tapping and made me work HARD to separate. The torch finally won. The only part inside the shaft support tube was the rubber spacer doughnut around the shaft... is there supposed to be more at the top of the tube on a 39? Any type of bearing or hard bushing assembly? Appreciate the help.

I make them out of wood. It will last forever and never rust. Oil the center good when you pound it down in.

The last one I made out of a treated deck 2" X 4" cut off that I had saved for a jack spacer block. Made some out of oak. I don't think it really maters what type of wood down in the tube.

steiners p/n acs339, $19.95, phone # 1-800-link_disallowed. looked on this forum and didn't notice one. good luck, d.coleman

besides wood i have use brass or aluminum also. i stick it dwon into the tube about 2 inches, then use a center punch on the outside on each side to stake it into position so it dont slip. Leave about .020 inch clearance on the bore. Grease it up good as Dick said.
