301 overhaul kits

Hi guys. Looking for the best overhaul kit for my AC 7000. It's started leaking coolant from around the o-rings. (i believe) What's been the most economical kit to rebuild and get better cold starting? What else should I look at while she's apart (5500 hrs) figuring on pump and turbo checkup.

I like the Totalseal kits. It will start much better than new. Don't be afraid to put a little extra out for the parts as you will save in starting fluid cost alone.....

Also, get the head pressure tested to make sure your injector tubes are not leaking. That is what happened to my 7000, but once I got it apart I found a lot of wear in the bearings and rings and decided to do an out of frame OH. Also, when you get the sleeves out, you will probably find a lot of pitting in the lower cylinder bores. You can get these bored out and sleeved or you can clean it really well, coat it with JB weld, and spend a long time filing and sanding the JB weld down smooth. The sleeves should slip right in and be able to be spun when fully seated in the bores by just your fist inside the sleeve. If it doesn't, keep sanding, wire brushing, and cleaning. It'll take a lot of patience, or at least mine did. Also, use vegetable oil on the o rings and don't oil them until you are just ready to put them in. Oil the bores upper and lower slightly so the o-rings will not snag on anything.

As far as a kit, I got mine from PowerMaxx, which had the high compression kit (from 15:1 to 16.3:1) and it definitely starts better. I think the kit was around 1300 with a valve kit and all the bearings and bushings included (cam and wristpin bushings included in there also). I bought my PowerMaxx kit through walt's tractor parts online. I know another guy that has had really good luck with Tisco kits, but I wanted the high compression kit, and wihtout spending over 2 grand on the Herschell Adams kit (the company that bought out M&W I think) for their high compression kit, I didn't really have much of a choice.

I would go thru the head - valves and pressure test and check it with a staight edge. pop test the injectors. if you are not pushing oil into the intake and the fins are straight and not dinged up the turbo would be ok. the biggest thing is the oring groves in the block, they have to be super clean and I would use oring soap only. I have most all parts for that engine. a "out of frame kit" high compression is $1075 frt inc.
