Exhaust Manifold repair on WD

I have a 1950 WD that needs a repair on the Exhaust manifold. It appears that the stub that goes between the muffler and manifold was originally welded to the manifold but has now broken free. When I looked at replacement manifolds it appears that they are threaded to accept the stub. My Manifold is not threaded. I have 2 questions: First, can I reweld the stub to the manifold and does the stub have to be cast iron or Second, could I cut new threads into the old manifold and fix it that way.
I know new manifolds are not overly expensive, but any way I could save money on this project is a bonus.
Thanks for any help/ideas you could give me.
