OK I have the manual and I have read other posts on how to change the D17 brakes.............I like the idea of welding a piece of flat iron to pin to help remove...........but here is MY delima................all the post I have read say to remove the bottom cover to access the brake anchor pin...........I do not have a bottom cover.........just a hole..........I can see in there but the anchor pin extends beyond the hole so no way to weld on and get to.............any advice?.........pictures?.....

Howdy, I changed out the brakes(pads)on my d17 a while back and after trying all the methods that are out there I found the best thst workedfor me was to insert a torch threw the hole in the bottom you are talkin about and "melt" the dang thing outa there, it worked like a charm!! Now you want to be very carefull not to bump the oxygen trigger or you could do some damage, but with some care I think you will find this is the easiest method and the most efective. The other methods may work for you but I tried them all and had no luck. Good luck, Hoss

OK.........I finally figured out the anchor pin........ther is no bottom cover.......so great news after that as I was able to get BOTH pins out and then with much effort was able to get the front shoes out but for the life of me can not get the rear shoes out.............do I have to disconnect the brake actuating rods?....the IT says nothing about that........how in the heck do I get that rear shoe out???

In order to get the rear shoe out of the housing, the brake actuating rods must be removed. The rods are a 3/8 diameter threaded into a trunnion at the bottom of the shoe actuating levers. Once you have removed the rod the rear shoe and levers may be lifted out together.

Thank you.....that is kind of what I figured but the IT manual says nothing about removing the acuating rods..........I did not want to mess something up............I am still stunned that I got those pins out after everyone talks so much about them.............
