Had a heck of a time today

Took my 34 CC Case in to have a throwout bearing put on it. SO, I decided to use my boys 49 WD on the belt to start my 48 H Farmall to get it to start. I was by myself. . If I tried to tighten the belt with the pulley engaged, I couldnt keep the belt on the pulley. If I disengaged the pulley and got the belt tight, then I couldnt push it back in to engage it. Any ideas??

You can disengage the pulley on the Farmall to freewheel, right? We used to line up with a hammer mill, corn sheller, or another tractor with a WD or WD45 always with the pulley engaged, maybe with the aid of a broom handle or something. So I don't know what to tell you.

Engage the H pto but keep the clutch down with a chunk of 2x4 or something. Then tighten up the belt with the WD and get it spinning. Then go sit on the H and let the clutch out. Push the clutch back in when it starts. Then put the 2x4 back so you can go back to the WD and shut down that pulley. Loosen everything up and take the belt off while everything is disengaged.

Really alot of DANGEROUS trouble rather than getting a neighbor to help pull start for 5 minutes.

Ive started tractors like this for 40 yrs. A whole lot eaiser then pulling it when your trying to run the wires around the mag or distributor, readjusting the mag, changeing the setting on the carb, ect. I can do these things while it is still running, cept for changeing the mag, and see if theres a difference.rather than walking around and around the barnyard pulling it, and makeing adjustments
