When I try to start my Allis 170 4 cyl gas the engine kicks back real bad.It will go ahead and start somtimes and sometimes not. Engine is wired correctly and has not jumped time.HELP

I thought the same thing. I moved dist all over the the place and nothing changes. It allmost seems like it has a internal problem with compression. I ran a compression test and all is well.

Double check point setting, another possibilty is distributor advance sticking or spring broken had that happen on Massey 85. Also is starter and or battery up to par etc. Scott

I had a similar problem with a mag on a Allis tractor. Sometimes it would run a little. Lot of backfiring. It nearly broke my arm cranking it. I got a distributor to replace the mag and everything was fine after that.

There could be carbon tracks in the distributor cap that cause the spark to jump to the wrong cylinder. These tracks are not visible to the naked eye. I suggest a new cap and rotor.

Had the same problem on my B once.
The material on the points that rides on the cam in the dist wore down and the points were not opening. The engine would not start, popped and kicked back.
