My Avery A

Many years ago in the late 50's, my friend's Dad bought a small hobby farm not too far away from Edmonton, Alberta. Sitting in the bushes and weeds was an old red tractor that apparently my friend's Uncle had purchased and it eventually made its way to his brother's farm. I don't know how many times I saw it sitting there and didn't even glance at it, it was just an old tractor and at the time it was just an old piece of junk since I hadn't even driven a tractor in my life at that time. Years went by and it was hauled away to my friend's sisters place in Southern Alberta near Calgary.

In 1994, for some strange reason, I suddenly got interested in old iron and picked up a Massey 101 JR. for 100 Canadian dollars. Well, after I got it home I realized that the fellow who sold it to me should have paid me to haul it away for him. I restored the old thing and I still have it but I had taken the hook and I was into old tractors. Since then I have restored a Cockshutt 30 and am almost finished with a second 101 Junior.

Last year my friend's sister contacted me and told me that she'd like me to have the old red tractor that was on her Dad's farm years ago. She told me that it was an Avery but other than that she didn't know very much about it. In the fall of '99 we drove down south and picked it up and it is quite a beautiful little thing. It's never had any work done to it and of course it wasn't running, but it was complete and had new rear tires. I brought it home and have it stored at another friend's farm in his machinery shed. I cleaned out the gas tank (which was missing the cap) and must have taken about 5 gallons of straw out of it. Sime birds had obviously been using it as a birdhouse for quite some time.

Hopefully next spring (2001) I'll get it home and get to work on it. I have found out a ton of stuff about the Averys (and the Cletrac General GG from which it evolved) by asking questions and making contacts on the forum. I've even got a set of decals ready to go.

We don't see too many tricycle tractors of any type up in these parts, and almost never a single-front wheeled version so I'm looking forward to the day when I can haul it to a show. I've seen General GG's up here, but never an Avery. Meanwhile, my wife is still enforcing her basic rule of two tractors maximum at home at any one time, and considering I live in the suburbs, I guess that's a pretty fair deal. My son has a little 15 acre acreage about 3 hours away from here and eventually I'd like to get a shed built up there and move all my stuff out. I also have a little Case model V to do that is in similar shape to my first 101 so I've got lots to keep me busy after I retire next June after 31 years of lion taming in the classroom. Yesirree, old tractors are where it's at. I am always amazed at how much information is available on the YT forum. There is a ton of knowledge out there that the guys who use the forum are willing to pass on. I wish I could get to know some of them in person because they sure seem like good, down-to-earth people.

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally ... [Read Article]
