A Tale of How a Grandson and Grandfather Start Antique Tractor Pulling.

As the story starts out in a small rural farming area of Southwest, Va. It is called Speedwell, Va. We decided to go antique tractor pulling when I was 14 years old. I started thinking of all the things that we had to do to the Super C Farmall. It look like the biggest piece of rust you had ever seen. After a long time of restoration and a motor rebuild that was well needed because only one cylinder was firing. So we finally got the tractor re-done. The Super C looked better than when it came from the factory in 1951. It was ready to be pulled. We stared out with a 79' Ford F-250 and a 16' flatbed trailer and moved up to a 1991 Ford F-250 Diesel and a 24' flatbed trailer. When Mountain Empire Antique Tractor and Small Engine Club starts out in early spring, they have a plowing demonstration. The little Super C really enjoyed this. By the next year our neighbor had sold his home to a retired North Carolina dairy farmer by the name of Henry (Buck) Knox. I really enjoyed talking to him. He told me of the times farming with different types of tractors in the cotton, peanut, and corn fields. He later told me that he still had one of the old tractors. It was a 1953 Oliver 77 Row Crop Diesel, as he went on to tell me about the tractor. I found out that it need alot of work. So I took on the job of restoring the 77 that was given to me. When I got to Mooresville, N. C. to his old farm I saw the biggest bunch of junk. It was sitting under the shed with 3 flat tires and hardly any sheet metal. It took over 4 months of hard sanding, cleaning, and painting to make a show and pulling tractor. When Henry and Edna Knox was envited down to the farm, they could not believe that was the same tractor. Henry was so proud of the tractor that he brought everyone to the 77 Diesel. Then one fall day of 2000 Henry Knox came to see me he said that his cousin by the name of Eddie Knox had a 1954 Super M-TA that was in mint condition all that I had to do was to go and get the tractor. I really didn't think that a original tractor could have the factory paint but it did. You wouldn't have believed it. The hole tractor sparkled as the sun hit it. The tractor had been garage kept and less then 250 hours since the factory. I brought the tractor up the road back to V. A. as I stopped at a gas station a man came to me and told about the tractor's he had. The 1991 F-250 Banks Turbo Diesel was relieved to be back into V. A. The Super M-TA was very heavy and beautiful. Just as soon as the tractor was home we started preparing it for shows and pulling. We were surprised to find out that the tractor had brass gear knob and light switches. We are nowing having to build a 32' by 32' by 12' garage to kept the tractors in. Even now the tractor club has expanned to lawn and garden tractor pulling. We have gotten it to that also. I have a 1965 110 John Deere lawn mower. The tractor was also given to me by Price Creeger. The reason that he wanted to get rid of it was because he had bought a newer lawn mower. I have really enjoyed tractor pulls and shows. Everyday my Grandparents Quincy and Joann Bridgers talk of bigger and better things. More pulling, shows, and tractors. I have enjoyed these years with my Grandparents especially for all the money and hard work they both have put into me. I want to also think Henry(Buck)and Edna Knox for all there support and enthuasiam into tractor restoration. Also a special thanks to Eddie Knox and Price Creeger for the tractors that are really valued and taken care of. And now at the closing of a great story of a grandfather and grandson relationship. I have now been in the tractor club for 3 years of fun and entertainment. Keep tractor pulling and restoring those tractors. JMB

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally ... [Read Article]
