Grandpas Super M

Everyone feels like they did somthing truly exceptional at least once in their life. I thought I had experienced those feelings until I finally finished restoring the Super M. That was a feeling of accomplishment! I live on my family farm in Champaign county Illinois, it has been on my mother's side for nearly a century. The winter of 1998 I ventured into our old barn which stored my grandfathers 1953 Super M. Never before had a seen such a hunk of junk! Paint that deemed a reddish rust color, rims that were stuck in the ground eight inches, and feeling sick just from looking at it! But for some reason I wanted to fix it. My grandfather had long since retired, and was happy as ever to let me take a shot at fixing it. I tore into it not knowing what to expect. I spent the frigid winter in the dark recesses of that barn turning my Farmall catastrophy into the nicest running Super M around. Over thirty two hundred dollars later and after replacing darn near everything, I had a perfect Farmall. And under the inch of grease on the serial number tag their was proof it was a Louisville model! The next spring nobody could believe that the shiny old red tractor on the Cochran farm was Grandpa's old one. The Super M had a non working hour gauge on it that had been installed at the dealership in 1954, it was stopped at 7911 hours. I replaced the non working gauge, but set the new one right where the old one left off. I have accumulated quite the collection of Minneapolis Molines, but I do enjoy the Farmall most of all.

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally ... [Read Article]
