 07:08 01/14/10  My new 740
Found this baby in north east georgia.. took over a year and a half of dickering with the owner to get him to let it go.

finally got a break in work and drove up with a buddy and picked her up.. was about a 16hr round trip. Just got her home, she's still on the trailer. Right off the bat I know I will need to rebuild the hyds and steering system. I don't think she charges ( alternator conversion in place.. but ratty looking ). Does seem to hold good oil pressure, and no water in the crankcase oil. took a bit of coaxing and a hot battery to get her to start inthe 20' weaker.. but she fired up after some choking and cranking over and crawled up on the trailer under her own power. I've enclosed pic of her followign me hom on 285 in ga, plus one where we pulled over at a BBQ place to eat.

had some time after the daily chores to play..er work on the 740.

got the 3pt hitch working.. though needs a oil change and sump cleaning..

de-haired some of the wireing and got her to charge..

got the lamps working

solenoid is a little dodgey.. will replace it.. and think that is the bulk of the cranking problems.. not the starter itself.. though I won't be able to verify that for sure until I replace the old buzzy solenoid. I got a spare old but working starter on the shelf if I need a swap.

got the steering adjusted.. might not rebuild it at this time.. it actually adjusted out pretty good..

I think this weekend I will get all her vital fluids changed and flushed and give her a test ride around the pasture.. the shifter ont he tranny is a lil stiff.. but I think will free up with use.. according to the prev owner.. she has been parked for the better part of last year in a shed, and the year before that wasn't used very much either.

finished flushing the steering pedistal, and refilled with oil.

drained and flushed the hydro sump// had lotsa water init, so flushed with a quart of atf and a gallon of diesel, let circulate, then drained.. did it again.. came out clean.. then refilled with oil.

drained the gear reduction boxes, flushed with kerosene, and the diffy as well, then refilled with oil.

still need to work on the tranny and drain / flush and pull top to replace start switch.

have rigged the alt to work, but it still needs more work.

need to replace the solenoid before I can correctly evaluate the starter.

have ordered a oem choke knob.

put on a new thumb start switch and start solenoid. got the charge circuit working a lil more 'automagical' with the addition of a diode and resistor.

got the trans oil drained, flushed, and changed.

have the air cleaner off in order to do the solenoid and left it off as I will be pulling the tin to rebuild the steering box perhaps as early as this weekend.

cnh had a trans cover gasket.. and tsc had the switch.

Had to cut the steering wheel off by splitting the hub so i could finsh working on the steering box.. got it adjusted and lubed. Boy.. those rowcrop steering boxes sure are a bit different than the regular ford boxes...

installed a dash lamp and got the sheet metal buttoned back up and installe dthe air cleaner and battery.

I have a couple more little things to do, then she will be ready for some test driving around the pasture to see how she does.

Did a minor repair on 1 rear rim, may consider replacing that rim when i put new tires on her, but for now it will run. Cleaned the fuel system and put in some fresh gas, and then took a couple joy rides around the pasture and adjusted the carb.

Today's Featured Article - Fire in the Field A hay fire is no laughing matter-well, maybe one was! And a good life-lesson, too. Following World War II many farm boys returned home both older and wiser. One such man was my employer the summer I was sixteen. He was a farmer by birth and a farmer by choice, and like many returning soldiers, he was our silent hero: without medals or decorations, but with a certain ability to survive. It was on his farm that I learned to use the combination hand clutch and brake on a John D ... [Read Article]
