I'm going through the same thing on my 990. I took that cover off and found a grease soaked rats nest. Thought it was a lube issue because a little WD40 got it working for a while. Now I'm back to no release. I'm going back into the clutch to recheck the clearance. FWIW- the screws the manuals talk about are on the outboard edge of the clutch cover. 3 small, maybe 5/16" set type screws, Allen head, with a lock nut. As near as I can tell when the manual talks about checking clearances with a feeler they mean from the outside edge of the cover plate. I'm still figuring this out, but found the manual not all that clear on this. I'm using the DB/Case shop manual too.
My post on my issues and Rich's response is in this section under "Rut-row!"

Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
