CS, my 830 is the older model and has the regulator standing up on top of the filter housing. As you stated, any air entrance would be a no no. The way flow is in that systen is, gravity thru the rear canister then through to the transfer pump then return to the filter base to the second stage then to the final stage then to the pump. The second stage and final being seperated by the transfer pump are near impossible to bleed without opening the T valve you noted. Later systems had a pressure regulator in thew valve body behind the 7/8 flat hex plug between the filters on the side.
Those are not complicated systems but a basic understanding is necessary.
The systems are pretty bulletproof but getting to that age!! Rarely does it require a replacement of the transfer pump but if there is full flow to it and the valves are clean maybe so, but I would be surprised, but have been a few times.
