Rich, I was part of a group of case dealers that Attended meetings at the new Consolidated Diesel facilities in 1982? They spent some time telling us of their plans to repower all Case Ag. and Industrial equipment with the new CDC engines. They showed us pics., like the first you posted. I don't know if the 3-290 ever made it into any Case equipment. We were sure looking forward to the CDC powered DBs. The later Maxxums wern't exactly what we were expecting, and the electric over hyd trans, turned into a nightmare in the early years. The DB hydra-shift was pretty bullet proof. We were also really looking forward to seeing the 1690 engine disapear. That 6cyl engine should have been good with the multiple head design and all, but turned out to be the opposite. Loren

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
