The handle has to come back to neutral to shift. It's been a long time since I was in dad's, but I know that some gears are forward, some are backwards and neutral is in the middle. So, to go from 1st to 2nd, you have to pull it out of 1st, back to neutral, turn the t handle to wherever 2nd is, then pull it into 2nd. Bit complicated, but a lot nicer than the nut grinder between the legs stick. Once you catch on, it works pretty slick. I know it's all cables, so your not gonna want to try the find'emorgrind'em.
