You do have to split the engine to get to the oil pump. I would pull the pan down first and make sure that the pickup is not pluged. You could pour oil down the oil pipe that comes out of the pump and try to prime it. The two things I have found is the pickup pluged and the back plate gets wore to where it will not pickup oil. You can resurface the back plate as long as the vanes are good. The gasket has to be the correct thickness.
